Dear Diary,
After I saved all the children from the Gobblers, Lee Scoresby blew up his balloon and flew me and Iorek and Roger to the island of Svalbard. Our balloon was attacked and we got separated, but I found my way to the armored bear fortress. There I met with the king of the bears, Iofur Raknison. I convinced that I was a daemon, and for he to have me, cause he wanted a daemon like a human, he would have to defeat Iorek Byrnison in combat.
Later, Iorek came charging to the fortress, like the alethiometer told me he would. He and Iofur fought right there. You can't ever trick a bear, but because Iofur wanted to be a human, Iorek was able to defeat him (even though he's smaller, and tired n' all). After that Iorek was hailed as the rightful king of the bears, cuz he was a prince before he was exiled.
Then we marched into Svalbard's mountains to see my father, Lord Asriel. He had built a luxurious house on an mountaintop, but he was imprisoned there. We got him out of there and he was free at last. How happy I was to know that he was my father and that I was with him!

Escape!
Dear Diary,
A few days ago, I woke up in the captivity of the Nomayed hunters. They brought me to Bolvangar, the centre of Oblation Board operations! A scientific kinda man checked me in, fed me, and put me to bed. I talked to other girls and thy said that every while, the nurses took a child, and they didn't return. I fell asleep, exhausted, with Pantalaimon in my arms.
The next day, I found Roger and Billy Costa in the eating place. We talked secretly, and I told them how the gyptians were a-comin' to save us. Oh, how happy I was! But then, my own mother, Mrs. Coulter, came in her zeppelin. I ran out into another building so she wouldn't see me. I was in a strange hall, but what was on the walls was even stranger: tens of cages sat on shelves, filled with daemons. Oh! the horror! Cause they weren't right, y'see. They were there, but they weren't, like a night-ghast.
It was then that some of the men found me. They took me to a room I hadn't seen, but I knew what they would try to do. I saw a large shiny machine and knew that it would sever Pantalaimon from me. I tried to fight, but their grips were like iron. I had lost all hope. But Mrs. Coulter swooped in and saved me. She took me far away from that dreadful place, and I cried. I guess my mom is okay.
After that I started a fire in the kitchens. I pulled the fire-bell and put on my furs. I ran out into the cold as I tried to get the other children to follow me. All of a sudden, I saw Iorek Byrnison hurtle into vision. I clambered onto his thick metal armor, and the kids followed us as he led us to the gyptian sledges. At last we were safe, or so I thought...

From Trollesund to Bolvangar
Dear Diary,
The other day we docked in Trollesund. It is a town on Lapland's shore. A man Farder Coram knew said that their was a panserbjorn, which is a big kind o' armored bear. All the other panserbjorne are guarding Lord Asriel. He's trapped in a prison in Svalbard. This bear' armor had been taken away by the city, so we a-freed him and he got it back, cause the alethiometer told me where it was.
That was when we left for Bolvangar, where they take the children. The alethiometer told me there was some sort of a ghost in a village by our route. I kind of knew I had to, so I rode the bear (his name was Iorek Byrnison) to the town. What we found was that it en't a ghost at all, it was a child without their daemon! Boy was I so scared! We took him back to our sledges, but he died. Oh! I think that is what the Gobblers are doing.
I was back on the sledges, and I was worried for a time.
Then arrows started raining out of the sky! It was so foggy, no-one could see where they were comin' from. I tried to hide down in the snow, but a big hand tied me up. I was being driven away on a sledge, and the sounds of the fight faded away. I am afraid; I don't know where Pantalaimon and I are going.
Love,
Lyra

On the Run to the North
Dear Diary,
I ran away from Mrs. Coulter. At a party, a smart man told me that she was the leader of the General Oblation Board. She's the Gobbler who's taking all the little kids! And I think her daemon, which is a golden monkey, found the alethiometer in my bedroom. The Master said only six were made. It is like a compass with three needles. I took all the clothes I could and ran out into the London streets.
I was goin' to sleep by a canal when Tony Costa found me. He took me back to their ketch and I stayed in Billy's old room. Then we went to the Fen. It is a big swamp n' glade-type area. All the gyptians were going there to decide what to do about the kids what're bein' Gobbled. Lord Faa, leader of the gyptian nations, decided that a force would set sail for the North.
There is a big reward for me back in London, but Lord Faa doesn't want to turn me in. He talked to me and told a story that at first I didn't believe. He said that Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter were my parents! He said that Mrs. Coulter wasn't supposed to see me, but she did because my (father?) was imprisoned in the North. I guess I've got to assume that's all true.
I figured out how to work the alethiometer. Farder Coram helped me. You have to ask it a question using the meanings of the pictures on the side, and it answers it with those same 36 pictures. I got scared when the machine warned of one of our spies dying, and he did. When that happened, John Faa decided that I'd better go to the North with all of the men; I may be important. Well, I got my wish: I'm goin' to the North...
Yours Truly,
Lyra

Hey From London!
Dear Diary,
Hi again. A couple of weeks ago other kids started getting taken! I spent a day helping Ma Costa looking for Billy, and when I got back to the College, Roger was gone! Other gyptian kids think they're bein' taken up to the North.
Then later I went to a party thrown by the Master. He gave me a thingy that he called an alethiometer. He asked me to keep it secret, and he said I would have to figure out how to work it by myself. Then, at the party, I met a female Scholar that's different than the others. She was beautiful and exiting. She even talked a bit about Dust! Then Mrs. Coulter, for that was her name, asked me to go back to London with her! I may even get to see the North!
We're having so much fun in London. We might go shopping and eat fancy things in the afternoon, then put on makeup and have a fancy party with lots of important people at night! I'm having so much fun!
Sincerely,
Lyra

Meet Me, Lyra
Dear Diary,
Hello. My name is Lyra Belacqua, and I am twelve. I live in Oxford, England, at Jordan College. My two best friends are Roger, the cook's son, and Billy Costa. Billy is a gyptian and his family's boat comes to our town every fall and spring. My daemon's name is Pantalaimon.
I en't very smart, cause I only ever learn things from a Scholar when they try to teach me. I know a bit o' geometry and biology, things like that. I always tell about what I'm learning when my Uncle Asriel comes to visit. He is an explorer! He goes to the North on exciting adventures. When I was in the Retiring Room Listening to them, I heard them talking about Dust. Boy I wish I could go to the North someday... He takes care of me, cuz my parents died in a dirigible accident when I was real little. He got me this diary in Loza Kremble.
Signed,
Lyra
